Tax season survival tips for authors 🗂️

ALEXA BIGWARFE

AUTHOR COACH & BOOK MARKETER

Hello Reader,

If tax season makes you want to hide under a blanket with a good book, I completely understand.

But here's the thing: your author business comes with some genuinely great tax advantages, and most indie authors don't take full advantage of them.

Editing fees, book covers, writing conferences, software tools, marketing expenses, your website—almost everything you invest in your author business can be a legitimate write-off. That means every dollar you've put into building your publishing career could be working harder for you right now.

A few tips to make this season smoother:

→ Keep a simple monthly spreadsheet of income and expenses

→ Maintain a separate bank account for your author business

→ Don't overlook digital tools and online courses—they count

→ When in doubt, consult a CPA who understands creative businesses

I'm not a tax professional, so please do work with one—but I want to make sure you're walking into that conversation informed and prepared.

Want the full breakdown? I've put together a deeper guide on the blog.
