Big Changes Coming to KDP!

Hello Reader,

Two big changes at Amazon KDP!

  1. No more download and transfer via USB
  2. No more .mobi files (very important!)

First, let's discuss the hoopla over the download and transfer via USB.

I've seen a lot of people losing their minds over the changes Amazon announced about Kindle downloads - including some viral TikToks that led to people wanting to boycott kindle entirely, and I wanted to make sure you've got the most up to date information to battle the disinformation.

What’s Changing?

Amazon is removing the “Download and transfer via USB” option from the "Manage Your Content and Devices" page. This feature was originally created for the earliest Kindle models, which didn’t have WiFi and relied on USB transfers. Since all modern Kindles can receive books wirelessly, Amazon sees this as an outdated function.

That said, this does not mean you can’t transfer files via USB at all. If you already have an ebook downloaded on your Kindle, you can still access the file and move it manually. Also, if you send personal EPUB files to your Kindle (via email or USB through the Send to Kindle route) this process is unaffected.

Why Does It Matter?

At first glance, this seems like a minor housekeeping update. But here’s the bigger picture:

  • This change makes it harder for users to remove DRM (Digital Rights Management) from Kindle books.
  • Older Kindles (2010–2014) that primarily use AZW3 files could easily have their DRM stripped with certain tools, but Amazon has been shifting toward KFX files, which have more advanced DRM protections.
  • If you buy a Kindle book today, it might be restricted to newer Kindle models, making it harder to access on older devices or convert for other e-readers.
  • Amazon’s Kindle app for PC now only supports KFX files, meaning it’s no longer compatible with third-party tools like Calibre.

What This Means for Your Kindle Library

If you primarily read within the Kindle ecosystem (on a Kindle device, the Kindle app, or a Fire tablet), you won’t notice much of a difference. But if you like having control over your ebook files—whether for backup, transferring to another e-reader (like a Kobo), or ensuring long-term access—this could be a frustrating shift.

Amazon has always operated within a closed ecosystem, and this is another step in reinforcing that. While your books remain available in your Kindle library, the ability to manage them outside Amazon’s system is becoming more limited.

2. No more .mobi files

KDP's MOBI Phase-Out: What You Need to Know

This is a big one, but not anything to get too nervous about.

First - no panicking. While you won't be able to load .mobi files after 3/18/25, there is no requirement to swap your files by then. But, mobi files will not be supported, so it's a good time to make your plan to convert.

IF YOU ARE ABOUT TO PUBLISH A BOOK - and your formatter gave you only a .mobi file, please go back to them and request the .epub file.

Here are the details you need to know:

Amazon KDP has officially discontinued support for MOBI files, making EPUB the new standard. If you're still using MOBI, it's time to convert to ensure your books remain available.

To assist you in making this change, we've put together a comprehensive guide covering:

  • Why KDP made this change
  • How to convert MOBI to EPUB using Kindle Create, Vellum, and other tools
  • Free conversion resources like PublishDrive

Stay ahead of the transition and avoid any disruptions to your ebook sales.

Hello Reader, As I prepare for the launch of my 16th book (my 2nd novel - the others are all nonfiction of various genres), I put on my "author" hat instead of consultant hat, and am reminded of how much goes into marketing a book - both before the launch and after. The book launch and marketing process can be a very long and daunting checklist, especially if you don't have a large following. From building your ARC team so that you have reviewers ready when the book goes live, to placing the...
